Before you stands the Altes Landgericht in Düsseldorf a magnificent testament to a bygone era. This imposing structure wasn’t always a courthouse. Its story begins much earlier.

The Altes Landgericht wasn’t constructed all at once. Construction began in 1913. The initial plans were modest. However war intervened. In November 1915 a decision was made. The building’s scope expanded significantly. This resulted in a monumental entrance. The exterior walls are clad in Rhine bricks. Their colors range from light red to dark violet. The imposing columns are made of Kirchheimer shell limestone. So are the cornices and balustrades. Six three-meter-high figures grace the entrance. They represent classical and Christian virtues. Justice however is not among them. You’ll find Justice inside. Her gilded head sits above the archway of the main staircase. The second floor features busts. They depict “jurists and wise men of antiquity”.

The Altes Landgericht served as a courthouse until 1955. Then it was repurposed. It now houses administrative offices. It has also hosted numerous cultural events. These include exhibitions and concerts. Its architectural splendor is undeniable. The building’s blend of Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles makes it unique. The richly detailed façade draws the eye. The building’s interior is equally impressive. Large halls showcase exquisite woodwork and murals. These depict legal themes.

The Altes Landgericht gained international attention during the third Majdanek trial. This took place from 1975 to 1981. Later the high-profile Mannesmann trial occurred here. That concluded in 2006 with substantial fines.

Today the Altes Landgericht remains a significant landmark in Düsseldorf. It stands as a symbol of the city’s resilience and rich history. Its past is interwoven with legal proceedings and cultural events. It is a stunning example of early 20th-century architecture. It continues to captivate those who see its beauty. This is far more than just a building. It’s a living piece of Düsseldorf’s heritage.
