They proved that a community garden is more than just plants. It’s a community’s heart. In the 1990s the MTA closed the garden. They needed to renovate the station beneath. It seemed like the end. Yet the community held on. With the assistance of GreenThumb and GrowNYC the gardeners rebuilt. They created raised beds. New fences and pathways emerged. A tool shed. A shade tent provided respite from the summer sun. DEP architects cleverly designed the shade structure. It hid the concrete roof of the station. A permanent water system ensured thriving growth.
But Union Street Community Farm isn’t an isolated story. It’s intertwined with the history of the neighborhood. The vibrant green space stands in contrast to the street’s past. The farm is linked to the Park Slope Food Coop. Coop members assisted in clearing the land. The Coop’s compost program began here. Today many active garden members are also active Coop members. The Coop supports the farm. They help with repairs and even provide work credits for needed services.
