A bustling transportation hub, Hoboken Terminal has witnessed countless journeys. Hoboken Terminal stands as a testament to a bygone era of travel. This magnificent structure, opened in 1907, was built by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Hoboken Terminal combined rail, ferry, and pedestrian traffic in one innovative design. It was a milestone in American transportation.

Hoboken Terminal quickly became a vital gateway. More than 50,000 people use it daily. This makes it the tenth busiest railroad station in North America. It’s also the sixth busiest in the New York area. The terminal has played a vital role in countless commutes and cross-river journeys.

In 1930, Thomas Edison himself controlled the first electric train departure from Hoboken Terminal to Montclair. The station also boasts the first installation of central air-conditioning in a public space. It also saw the first non-experimental use of mobile phones. These facts highlight Hoboken Terminal’s embrace of innovation and progress.

The terminal’s history isn’t without its challenges. In 1905, a devastating fire destroyed the original facility, leading to the construction of the current grand structure. The original clock tower, with its distinctive copper cladding, was removed during World War II. The copper was needed for the war effort. A radio tower replaced the original clock tower. Finally, in 2006, a new clock tower, modeled after the original, was erected, complete with the illuminated “LACKAWANNA” sign.

Hurricane Sandy dealt another blow in 2012, severely damaging the station. However, Hoboken Terminal once again proved its resilience, undergoing extensive repairs and reopening to continue its essential service.

Hoboken Terminal has also graced the silver screen, appearing in films like “Funny Girl,” “Three Days of the Condor,” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” Its architectural grandeur and historical significance have made it a sought-after location. Even today, Hoboken Terminal remains a vibrant hub, connecting people and places. It stands as a proud reminder of a rich past, while continuing to serve the present and future.
