Have you ever felt the pull of a mountain? El Cajon Mountain beckons. It rises majestically above the San Diego landscape a granite giant. Known also as El Capitan or El Cap this peak is a prominent landmark. It’s located within the Cuyamaca Mountains specifically in East County San Diego.

El Cajon Mountain boasts a summit reaching 3677 feet. That’s 1121 meters for our metric friends. The mountain is mostly within the Cleveland National Forest. Some areas also belong to the county’s El Capitan Open Space Preserve. Interestingly much of the area surrounding El Cajon Mountain is private property. There’s even an Indian reservation nearby.

Reaching the summit isn’t a walk in the park. Many consider the main trail from Lakeside one of San Diego County’s most challenging hikes. This is due to its steep inclines and constantly changing terrain. The hike is class 1 which means it’s mostly a trail. There used to be class 3 climbs up the south face. These are now closed to the public as that area is now private property.

Imagine the views from the top. You can probably see for miles. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment reaching the summit. A summit register awaits for hikers to sign. You can leave a note for other hikers or read previous entries. The journey is filled with surprises. You might even see paragliders soaring through the air.
