Was there ever a statue more relocated than Jawaharlal Nehru’s here in Chennai? It became a key stop for politicians, with Rajiv Gandhi even garlanding the statue in 1991, just hours before his tragic assassination. But progress, in the form of a new cloverleaf flyover, demanded change. The statue was moved to the Inner Ring Road to make way for construction, a decision that sparked local outcry. Promises were made to reinstate the statue to its rightful place. After some time, forlorn and somewhat forgotten beneath the newly constructed flyover, the Jawaharlal Nehru statue found its new, less central home.
