This gallery, right here at 547 West 25th Street, has been a cornerstone of the New York art scene for over 26 years. Cheim & Read showcased a vibrant array of talent. From photography giants like Diane Arbus and Robert Mapplethorpe to the thought-provoking installations of Jenny Holzer, this space pulsed with creative energy. Established artists mingled with emerging talents. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings filled the gallery. Cheim & Read even hosted exhibitions focusing on specific artists. Remember the Ron Gorchov exhibition in 2021? It showcased his final paintings, a powerful testament to his unique vision. These saddle-like canvases, both convex and concave, defied traditional forms. They seemed to spring from the walls, brimming with an energy all their own. Cheim & Read didn’t just exhibit art. They championed artists, fostering their careers and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the New York art world. Sadly, Cheim & Read closed its doors at the end of 2023. But its legacy continues. She opened Bueno & Co in 2024, continuing to work with many of the artists associated with Cheim & Read. So, as you stand here, imagine the creative energy that once filled this space.
