Founded in 1972 the Facultad de Óptica y Optometría stands proudly. It’s a testament to Spain’s commitment to advanced education in optics and optometry. This impressive institution wasn’t always here. Its journey began much earlier. It traces its roots back to 1933. The Instituto de Ampliación de Estudios e Investigación Industrial played a crucial role. This institute spearheaded the initial optics and phototechnics programs. In 1936 it continued shaping the future of optics photometry and precision mechanics education. This legacy was then carried forward by the Instituto de Óptica “Daza de Valdés” under the CSIC.
The demand for qualified opticians led to the creation of a Diploma in Optometry in 1956. The curriculum was carefully structured. The Instituto de Óptica Daza de Valdés delivered the courses. A commission oversaw the program’s organization. The director of the Instituto de Óptica Daza de Valdés along with two professors from the Faculty of Science at the Universidad Central were part of this commission.
The Escuela de Óptica opened its doors in 1958. Its initial location was on Calle de Serrano 121. The school offered courses and laboratories. By 1959-1960 the program expanded to three years. More subjects were added. Limited space restricted enrollment to 35 students per year. The Facultad de Óptica y Optometría eventually moved in 1972. Its new location was Calle Alvarado 26. The building on Calle Arcos de Jalón became the Facultad’s home in 1974. The campus was a former Colegio Universitario Integrado. It was built in 1968 by architect Fernando Moreno Barberá. Its design reflects the architectural style of the 1960s.
In 2012 the Escuela Universitaria de Óptica was renamed. It became the Facultad de Óptica y Optometría. This change reflected updated curricula. These new programs aligned with the European Higher Education Area standards adopted in 2010. This transformation marked the end of the diploma in Optics. It also saw the introduction of the degree in Optics. The Facultad de Óptica y Optometría continues to be a center for research and innovation. It offers a Master’s degree in Optometry and Vision. It also provides a Master’s degree in Optical and Image Technologies. The esteemed institution also houses a Doctoral program. The institution’s state-of-the-art clinic further enhances its reputation. It’s considered one of Europe’s leading centers for vision care research.
Despite its significant contributions the Facultad de Óptica y Optometría’s location has been a source of contention. Its distance from the main Complutense University campus has prompted ongoing calls for relocation. Students and faculty have advocated for a move to the Ciudad Universitaria campus. Their pleas for a more central location have been ongoing for over thirty years. They have used various methods to highlight their concerns including protests and demonstrations. Regardless of its location the Facultad de Óptica y Optometría remains a beacon. It stands as a shining example of excellence in the field of optics and optometry. It continues to shape the future of vision science in Spain and beyond.
