“Racing for a Cause” was more than just a slogan at the Macau Jockey Club. This place, the Hipódromo, wasn’t just about the thrill of the race. It was once a hub of charitable giving. But let’s step back to understand how this all unfolded.

The Macau Jockey Club started as the Macau Trotting Club in 1980. Imagine, if you will, horses trotting with harnessed athletes. This was harness racing, popular in Europe. Yet, the sport didn’t catch on in Macau. By 1988, the club shifted gears. It became a regular horse racing track. A few months later the Macau Jockey Club opened for a short period of time.

Stanley Ho’s company, STDM, stepped in, reopening it in January 1991. For decades, the Macau Horse Race Co held a monopoly. Tourists flocked here for weekend races. In its golden era, the MJC even hosted superstar jockeys.

The Macau Jockey Club was a popular film location. Chow Yun-fat, a Hong Kong megastar, filmed scenes here. Johnnie To, another big name, also shot on these grounds.

But there’s more to the Hipódromo than racing and movies. The Macau Jockey Club organized a charity day race every year. All the money raised went to educational scholarships. These scholarships helped students in financial need. The club also sponsored public clinics. In 2003, they established the Macau Loving Heart Charity Fund. This fund supported large-scale projects in China and Macau. It also aided smaller charity programs within the city.

The Hipódromo contributed to education. It allocated hundreds of thousands to MJC Charity Scholarships. These scholarships helped academically gifted students. The Macau Loving Heart Charity Fund was founded in 2003. It supported charities in Macau and mainland China.

In its heyday the club had more horses and ran more races than the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The MJC’s profit reached an all-time high during the 2003 to 2004 season. It ran over 1,200 races and had 1,200 horses.

However, the Macau Jockey Club ceased operations on April 1, 2024. The final meeting was held at Taipa Racecourse two days earlier. Plummeting wagering turnover and a reduction in the horse population meant it was no longer viable.

Still, the Hipódromo remains a landmark. It stands as a reminder of Macau’s racing history. It also reminds us of the good that can come from unexpected places. From harness racing to charity events, the Macau Jockey Club left its mark. The Hipódromo’s legacy extends beyond the racetrack. It touches the lives of those who benefited from its generosity.
