In Thailand, Varuna transformed into Phra Pirun. He became a god of rain and agriculture. People revere him.

Phra Pirun appears in royal attire. He carries a sword-staff. He rides a Naga serpent. This image symbolizes power and abundance.

The Ministry of Agriculture uses his image. It represents the importance of farming in Thailand.

Varuna’s connection to water remains. He oversees earthly waters and the Nagas. Nagas are mighty serpents. They respect him as their lord. His underworld kingdom is Patala. It is a glittering realm of Nagas.

Varuna embodies cosmic order. He is strict yet forgiving. People pray to him to wash away sins. He releases mankind from wrongdoing.

Though feared he is respected. Varuna’s nature is complex. He is both powerful and ambiguous.

To understand Varuna is to understand the ocean. The ocean is deep dark and cold. It is also euphoric. Varuna embodies both life and death. He is a messenger between worlds.
