Doesn’t the baked brick facade of the Rashid Madrasah whisper stories of a bygone era? This is no ordinary building. The Rashid Madrasah stands as a testament to Bukhara’s rich history and cultural heritage. It is a beautiful example of Central Asian architecture.

Let’s step back in time to the second half of the 19th century. The Bukhara Emirate flourished under the rule of Muzaffar Khan. It was during this time that a wealthy merchant named Abdurashid, hailing from Afghanistan, decided to leave his mark on this city. Abdurashid was a major tea wholesaler. He used his wealth to construct this madrasah. Hence, it was named after him. Rashid Madrasah is also known as Abdurashid Madrasah.

Imagine Bukhara in that era. The city thrived as a center for trade and Islamic learning. The Rashid Madrasah became an important institution. It helped to educate future generations.

Local legend tells an interesting tale about Abdurashid. It involves his wife. She constantly nagged. She was always complaining about her marriage. “Take him away! Take this away!” she would say. Abdurashid grew tired of her whims. So he struck a deal. He took her jewelry. He would sell it. With the proceeds, he would build a large marble pool in front of the madrasah. That pool is now gone.

The Rashid Madrasah has two floors. It features 25 cells. These cells once housed students. They dedicated themselves to their studies. The building is constructed from baked bricks. This gives it a distinctive look that is both sturdy and elegant.

After the Soviets came to power, the madrasah’s educational activities ceased. Despite this change, the Rashid Madrasah remained a significant cultural landmark. It was included in the national list of real estate objects of material and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan in 2019.

In 2010, a state program allocated funds for the madrasah’s restoration. The plan included studying the building. Also, it was planned to clean and structurally strengthen it. The goal was to prepare it for modern use. Sadly, despite the allocation of 50 million soums, the building remains in a state of disrepair.

Today, the Rashid Madrasah is undergoing renovation to become the Shashmaqom Center. The Shashmaqom is a genre of Central Asian classical music. The center will include a concert hall. Also, it will have rooms for a music school. The Rashid Madrasah is located near the Shahrud channel.

As we stand here, consider the Rashid Madrasah’s journey through time. From its origins as a center of learning to its planned rebirth as a music center, the Rashid Madrasah continues to evolve. It embodies Bukhara’s enduring spirit. It preserves its rich cultural heritage. This monument is under state protection. It stands as a reminder of Bukhara’s past. It shows a promise for its future.
