The Tagores were among the most renowned residents of Pathuria Ghata. Jairama Tagore, a successful merchant, moved here in the mid-18th century. This was when the British constructed Fort William. The Tagores established themselves in several North Kolkata neighborhoods including Pathuriaghata.

His family was known for their extravagant lifestyle and charitable contributions. The courtyard of their house boasts intricate cast iron works. It is one of the finest examples in Kolkata.

The Ghosh family came to Pathuriaghata during Warren Hastings’ time. They made significant contributions to music and charity. The Mullick family’s roots trace back to the 14th century. The Pathan ruler Shamsuddin Ilyas Sah bestowed the title “Mullick” upon them. This was for discovering gold mines near the Subarnarekha River. Rajaram Mullick, one of the earliest settlers of Calcutta, advised the East India Company.

The Singha Bahini deity worshipped by the Mullick family has a history of over 1500 years. It’s believed that Baidyanath Dey Mullick established this goddess in their house. The deity was brought from Chattagram after a divine dream.

Nimaicharan Mullick, a prominent businessman, was known as “the Banker and Mint Master”. He lent money to the East India Company and Bengali businessmen. His family’s wealth and influence were legendary.
