Envision a hidden gem nestled in Johannesburg’s heart. This is Little Brenthurst a smaller version of the grand Brenthurst mansion. It stands as a testament to history and elegance.

Little Brenthurst is more than just a house. It’s a piece of Johannesburg’s past. The Oppenheimer family has lived there since 1922. Ernest Oppenheimer the founder of Anglo American brought his family there. His son Harry grew up in the estate’s sprawling gardens. His son Nicky now lives in Little Brenthurst with his wife Strilli.

During World War II Little Brenthurst played an even more significant role. The Oppenheimers generously allowed Brenthurst the larger mansion to become a 50-bed hospital. It was known as the Brenthurst Auxiliary Hospital. Hundreds of patients from the Mediterranean and the Middle East were treated there. Dr Jack Penn established Africa’s first center for plastic surgery within its walls. He developed groundbreaking techniques later adopted worldwide. This shows the remarkable adaptability and community spirit of the Oppenheimers.

Little Brenthurst’s architecture is in the Cape Dutch style. It was designed by the renowned architect Herbert Baker. The house itself is a marvel. Its design blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The garden is a breathtaking display of horticultural artistry.

The gardens at Little Brenthurst are a testament to Joane Pim’s genius. She is considered one of South Africa’s pioneering landscape designers. She worked on the gardens from 1959 until her death in 1974. She created the rose garden a spiral circle reminiscent of a snail’s shell. She also created the indigenous garden featuring aloes proteas and Cape heaths. Her work helped shape the landscape architecture of South Africa.

Strilli Oppenheimer continues this legacy of environmental stewardship. She practices organic gardening. She uses no artificial fertilizers or pesticides. She believes in working with nature not against it. Her commitment to sustainable practices makes Little Brenthurst a unique example of ecological harmony.

Little Brenthurst is not just a house. It’s a microcosm of Johannesburg’s rich history. It’s a testament to a family’s enduring legacy. It is also a sanctuary of natural beauty. It is a true hidden gem worthy of admiration and respect. It’s a place where history nature and artistic vision converge in a truly remarkable way.
