Imagine a knight named Amenidello. He may have given Igreja de Mindelo its name. This story transports us back over a thousand years. We stand before Igreja de Mindelo. It has witnessed centuries unfold.

Igreja de Mindelo isn’t just a church. It is a landmark steeped in history. The earliest records mention Mindelo in 1068. The name might come from “Amenidello” or similar variations. He was possibly a knight. He fought against Arab forces long ago.

Now, Igreja de Mindelo shows the evolution of this land. Ancient documents from 1069, 1081, and 1095 mention properties in Mindelo. By 1258, records clearly listed places like Igreja. Passos, Pinheiro, Gondosendo, Outeiro, Manhalde and Paredes all appear. Families lived in these areas. Some lands belonged to the King. Many properties ended up with monasteries like Vairão, Moreira, Santo Tirso and Roriz. People donated land for the salvation of their souls.

Interestingly, Igreja de Mindelo had an earlier version. In 1081, a religious temple existed in Burgal. Burgal’s name came from its bustling activity. The current Igreja de Mindelo dates to the 18th century. Contracts with masons and carpenters were signed in 1770.

Mindelo once fell under the municipality of Maia. King Manuel gave Maia a regal charter in the 16th century. This included Mindelo. In 1836, Mindelo joined Vila do Conde. Records from that time show 100 households in the parish. The parish boundaries were set in 1611. The Monastery of Moreira defined the limits. Abbots from Fajozes and Vila Chã were present. Representatives from Porto and Vairão also attended.

While Igreja de Mindelo stands, remember the Liberal Wars. Troops commanded by Peter IV landed near Mindelo in 1832. They came from the Azores. They landed on July 8th before marching to Porto. The landing took Mindelo’s name. But it happened in Perafita, Lavra e Santa Cruz do Bispo.

The name “Mindelo” stretched between the Ave and Leça rivers until the 20th century. The area was managed by canons from the Convent of Moreira da Maia.

Today, Igreja de Mindelo remains a focal point. The parish includes Igreja, Gondosendo, Manhalde, Outeiro, Paredes, Passos and Pinheiro. Mindelo is close to Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim and Porto.

Agriculture and industry thrive here now. Mindelo was the first parish with a local Agenda 21. The community identifies problems. It sets priorities for sustainable development.

Igreja de Mindelo, dedicated to São João Evangelista dates back to the 18th century. Also notable is the Chapel of São Pedro dos Mareantes. It was constructed in the 20th century.

As you stand before Igreja de Mindelo consider its past. From ancient knights to modern community initiatives. This church represents Mindelo’s enduring spirit. It bridges centuries of history.
