Have you ever stepped onto a property that felt like it had a story to tell? Right here, in the heart of Görlitz, stands Wasserschloss Tauchritz, a water castle with a past as colorful as the blooming flowers dotting its surrounding gardens. Standing on the bank of the Berzdorfer See, the castle’s history stretches back to 1306, when it was first mentioned in documents. Back then, it was owned by Nikol von Neueshoven, a nobleman who played an important role as Erbrichter in Görlitz. The original water castle was carefully designed to resist the dampness of the surrounding wetlands. The building’s foundations were constructed on sturdy oak piles, which were constantly kept moist by the moat to prevent them from rotting. But its story is not just about its foundations, it’s about the people who stepped through its doors. The castle, like a witness to time, saw the rise and fall of the von Bieberstein family, who owned it for almost one hundred years, and the von Gersdorff family, who acquired it in 1422. Each family left a unique imprint on the castle, both in its architecture and its soul. But perhaps the most famous resident was Maria Sidonia von Warnsdorf, who commissioned the rebuilding of the castle after a devastating fire in 1683. Under her vision, the castle rose from the ashes, adopting the Baroque style, a transformation that added an elegant flourish to its silhouette. Now, it’s hard to imagine the castle any other way, with its sweeping, elegant facade and the beautiful sculpted figures of its triangular gable. The castle served many purposes throughout its long life. It was a place of residence for the wealthy, a place of schooling for the local children, and even a home for retired servants of the nearby Joachimstein Foundation. Even now, as it stands empty, awaiting its restoration, the castle whispers stories of its former glories. Its empty halls echo with past laughter, and its stone walls seem to sigh with memories of people who loved, worked, and lived within them. Take a moment and picture the castle’s grandeur, its stately facade reflecting the changing lights of the day. The castle’s story is a testament to the resilience of human spirit, and a reminder that even in silence, a castle can still hold the whispers of the past.
