Four hundred and forty-one students. That’s a lot of laughter echoing through these halls. Welcome to the Modersohn-Grundschule. This isn’t just any school. It’s a vibrant hub of learning nestled in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district. It stands proudly at the corner of Niemannstrasse and Simplonstrasse.

The Modersohn-Grundschule didn’t always bear this name. Did you know it began life in 1969 as the 30th Oberschule Friedrichshain? Built on a former allotment garden it quickly transformed. In 1971 it was renamed Franz-Stenzer-Oberschule. This honored Franz Stenzer a communist murdered in Dachau concentration camp in 1933. Then in 1993 it was renamed again taking its current name. It was named after the renowned painter Otto Modersohn. The school’s history reflects the changing times of Berlin.

The building itself holds its own stories. The original structure from 1969 received an energy-efficient makeover in 2001. Space became a challenge as the school grew. To accommodate more students the district took an innovative step. For the first time in the area an existing school building was expanded upwards. A new floor was added. This included a complete interior renovation. It also involved upgrading technical building equipment. This impressive expansion was partly funded by the Stadtumbau Ost urban redevelopment program.

The completion of the fourth floor was celebrated on January 23 2012. The work wasn’t finished there. In 2015 to meet the growing number of students the school’s cafeteria was significantly expanded. The total cost of these impressive renovations amounted to two million euros.

Even the schoolyard has its own charm. It boasts a sports hall complete with a 50-meter running track. Students here benefit from a wide range of activities. They have access to an extended musical education program. Interactive smartboards replace traditional chalkboards. The school operates an open all-day program. This ensures a holistic learning experience. This school is a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It’s much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where young minds flourish. It’s a vibrant part of Berlin’s rich history.
