Have you ever noticed how some of the most beautiful and serene places are often hidden in plain sight? St Stephen’s Church in Bandra is one such place. It’s nestled in one of the charming lanes of Bandra, just a short walk from the bustling Mount Mary Church.

The church’s history is a fascinating reflection of Bandra’s changing landscape. It was built in 1845, a time when the British East India Company was consolidating its power in Bombay. The need for a Protestant church in Bandra became apparent as English settlers sought spiritual solace far from home. A small group of dedicated parishioners raised Rs. 8000 to build this sanctuary on a hill near Mount Mary Church.

St Stephen’s Church is a charming example of the Gothic revival style, a popular architectural trend in Britain at the time. Despite its modest size, the church boasts some beautiful features. Tall lancet windows, adorned with stained glass, allow the cool Arabian Sea breeze to waft through the nave, creating a serene atmosphere for worship. These windows were not installed until after 1885. The altar, facing east, is adorned with three stained glass panels depicting pivotal New Testament scenes: the stoning of Stephen, Christ’s Ascension, and Paul’s Damascus Road encounter.

Today, St Stephen’s Church is part of the Church of North India (CNI). It continues to be a place of worship and a center for outreach and social programs. Though it stands in the shadow of its more famous neighbor, St Stephen’s Church is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Bandra, a place where you can find solace and a connection to history.
