Ever wondered what “Jovel” means? It’s Masematte for “good,” and perfectly describes the Jovel Music Hall in Münster. Right here, in a former 1930s car dealership, stands a venue steeped in musical history. The Jovel Music Hall first opened its doors in 1979, not here, but in an old cinema nestled between “Dondersring” and “Am Krug” street. It was the brainchild of Steffi Stephan, bassist for Udo Lindenberg. The original Jovel became a beloved hub, hosting a vibrant mix of concerts and disco nights. Legends like Udo Lindenberg, Simple Minds, BAP, Die Fantastischen Vier, H-Blockx, and even Miles Davis graced its stage. In 1987, the Jovel moved to the bottling hall of the old Germania Brewery. Then, in 2006, the brewery site was slated for redevelopment. The final performance at that location was a memorable one, with Steffi Stephan playing alongside friends like Carl Carlton, Hannes Bauer, Inga Rumpf, and Udo Lindenberg. After a temporary stint in a warehouse near the fire station, the Jovel found its current home here. The grand reopening in this renovated car dealership was on November 29, 2008, marked by a concert featuring Udo Lindenberg, Inga Rumpf, Julia Neigel, and Steffi Stephan with the “Panikorchester.” For a while, the future of Jovel Music Hall was uncertain. Steffi Stephan tirelessly searched for investors. Finally, in a triumphant moment in 2012, she secured the building in a bidding competition, ensuring the Jovel Music Hall’s legacy continues to thrive. Today, Jovel Music Hall welcomes artists of all genres, keeping the spirit of “good” music alive in Münster.
