Hidden in Dortmund’s northern embrace lies Brünninghausen/Knepper. This area might appear unassuming at first glance. But it holds a secret. Brünninghausen/Knepper whispers tales of a bygone era, a time before towering chimneys and the hum of machinery. Originally a quiet farming community, Brünninghausen/Knepper first appeared in historical records in 1464. Even the arrival of the Cologne-Minden railway in 1848, slicing through the heart of Brünninghausen/Knepper, couldn’t disrupt its agricultural rhythm. Imagine farmers tending their fields, oblivious to the industrial revolution brewing on the horizon. The year 1934 marked a turning point. The construction of the Gustav colliery brought the clang of industry to Brünninghausen/Knepper, forever changing its landscape. The colliery eventually closed in 1967. But a new giant had already risen in its place: the Gustav Knepper power plant, built in 1944. This power plant became a landmark of Brünninghausen/Knepper, operating until 2014. The colliery’s legacy wasn’t just industrial. It also birthed an unexpected natural haven. Subsidence from the mining activities created a wetland area after 1960. This area is now a protected nature reserve, a testament to the resilience of nature. Brünninghausen/Knepper, once a simple farming village, transformed into an industrial hub. And then, it gifted back a piece of nature.
