Beneath its Romanesque-revival and Gothic-revival design, what stories does this Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle hold? This house of worship stands at 225 Lenox Avenue. It has a rich history. It reflects Harlem’s evolving community.

Erected in 1891, the Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle was initially the Third Unitarian Church. Charles Atwood designed it. His architectural vision blended Romanesque and Gothic elements. The result is the impressive structure we see today.

By 1919, the Unitarian congregation dwindled. The building was sold to Congregation Chebra Ukadisha B’nai Israel. They were Holy Sons of Israel from Kalwarie, Lithuania. This reflected a wave of Jewish immigration to Harlem.

However, demographics shifted again. By the 1940s, many Jewish families had moved. In 1942, the Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle Christian Mission of the USA acquired the building. This Pentecostal, Caribbean and African-American church had been in Harlem since 1911. This became their second home.

The Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle is more than just a church. It’s a vital community center. It serves around 400 people. They offer clothing distribution and feeding programs. Their Compassionate Ministries provides aid to recent migrants. They offer food, clothing, and counseling.

The New York Landmarks Conservancy recognized the Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle’s significance. In 2024, they awarded the church a Sacred Sites Grant. The $7,500 grant will help fund chimney repairs. This ensures the building’s preservation for future generations.

Inside, you would have once heard the music of a Reuben Midmer & Sons organ. It was installed sometime after 1942. The organ featured electro-pneumatic action. It had 2 manuals, 13 stops, and 13 ranks. Sadly, this organ is extant but unplayable.

Before that, the Lenox Avenue Unitarian Church had an organ built in 1891. Frank Roosevelt built it. It had tracker-pneumatic action. It featured 2 manuals and 10 stops.

The Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle stands within the Mount Morris Park Historic District. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated it in 1971. This underscores its architectural and historical importance.

The Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle’s journey mirrors Harlem’s own. This building has transformed from a Unitarian church to a synagogue. Now, it serves as a Pentecostal church. It shows the neighborhood’s dynamic cultural shifts. The Ebenezer Gospel Tabernacle remains a testament to community. It is a beacon of faith. It stands as a landmark in Harlem’s vibrant tapestry.
