Nestled in the heart of Flushing, Queens, stands St. Andrew Avellino Roman Catholic Church. This magnificent structure has witnessed a century of prayers, hopes, and community spirit. St. Andrew Avellino isn’t just any church. It holds the unique distinction of being the only church in America named after this 16th-century Italian saint, the patron saint of heart attack victims. The story of St. Andrew Avellino Church began in 1914, a time when the burgeoning Catholic community in upper Flushing yearned for a spiritual home of their own. Seven dedicated laymen petitioned Bishop Charles McDonnell, their plea echoing the growing need for a local parish. After two years of persistent appeals, their wish was granted. The first Mass resonated through a movie theatre in June 1914, marking the humble beginnings of St. Andrew Avellino. The original wooden church, dedicated in 1916, held 567 souls. The parish expanded. A rectory, a school, and a convent became part of its growing campus. Twenty years later, the community’s ambition soared higher. They dreamt of a grander edifice, a testament to their unwavering faith. Funds were diligently raised. In 1940, the current St. Andrew Avellino Church was consecrated. This architectural marvel, built in the American Art Deco style, stands as a symbol of the parish’s enduring spirit. The church’s limestone façade and tapestry brick shimmer in the sunlight. Inside, intricate murals adorn the walls, their vibrant colors narrating tales of faith. A majestic Casavant organ fills the sanctuary with sacred melodies. The church has faced trials, like the fire of 1973, but each challenge has only strengthened its resolve. Renovations and additions, including a serene Saints’ Chapel and a tranquil Mary Garden, have enhanced its beauty. St. Andrew Avellino has been more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for a diverse community, embracing newcomers and longtime parishioners alike. Over 1,500 families, representing a rich tapestry of cultures, call St. Andrew Avellino home. This diversity adds to the vibrant tapestry of the parish, creating a unique blend of traditions and perspectives. Even a statue of the Blessed Mother, a cherished part of the church since 1914, bears witness to the passage of time and the resilience of faith. Despite an act of vandalism in 2017 that damaged the statue, the parish remained steadfast in its devotion. The statue was lovingly restored, a symbol of the unwavering spirit of St. Andrew Avellino. Today, St. Andrew Avellino Roman Catholic Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith. It stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring legacy of its patron saint.
