Seven-and-a-half meters tall and weighing 35 tons that’s the impressive bronze Buddha statue at Chùa Vạn Quốc. This magnificent pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City isn’t just a place of worship it’s a testament to resilience and faith.

Chùa Vạn Quốc’s story begins in the tumultuous years of 1963 to 1975. Following the 1963 coup the Unified Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam was formed. The new government surprisingly leased a 4-hectare plot of land to the Sangha for a mere 1 VND. The ambitious plan was to construct a seven-story stupa a stunning structure reflecting Vietnamese architectural traditions. Sadly only the stupa’s foundation and monks’ quarters were started. It wasn’t fully realized.

The years after 1975 brought significant changes. The government reclaimed much of the land. An amusement park and a theater were built on the pagoda grounds. But the spirit of Chùa Vạn Quốc persevered. In 1988 a dedicated Buddhist monk Tu Nhon petitioned for the return of the remaining land around the unfinished stupa. His persistence paid off. In 1993 the government granted his request.

The restoration and expansion began. The impressive 13-story stupa 63 meters high was completed in 2018. Its 13 floors commemorate the 13 Buddhist organizations involved in the 1963 protests against religious inequality. This wasn’t just a rebuilding it was a bold statement.

The Main Hall’s restoration cost a staggering 180 billion VND. This is where you see the colossal bronze Buddha statue. It’s the largest in Vietnam. The entire pagoda project including new construction and restoration eventually totaled an incredible 250 billion VND. The pagoda’s total land area is now a vast 11000 m2. It’s now the headquarters of the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam.

Today Chùa Vạn Quốc stands as a vibrant center of Buddhist life. The intricate details the majestic stupa the colossal Buddha statue all contribute to its awe-inspiring presence. It’s a place where history faith and architectural splendor converge a must-see destination in Ho Chi Minh City.
