Ruins to rebirth. That is the story of Leipziger Platz. Once an octagonal square bustling with life. It now stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience.

Leipziger Platz is located in the heart of Berlin. It sits just east of Potsdamer Platz. This square has witnessed centuries of transformation.

In 1734, Philipp Gerlach designed Leipziger Platz. It was initially called Octogon. This was due to its unique shape. The square was part of an urban ensemble. Pariser Platz and Belle-Alliance-Platz were also part of it. In 1814, the square was renamed Leipziger Platz. It was named in memory of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig.

The square became a hub of activity. Representative residential, administrative, and commercial buildings sprung up around it.

In 1796, a contest was held to design a memorial for Frederick II of Prussia. Friedrich Gilly proposed a temple monument on Leipziger Platz. The design was never built.

During imperial times, the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture and the Reichsmarineamt were located here. The Mosse Palace also stood on the north side of Leipziger Platz. Leipziger Platz 16 was originally built with the Palais Bleichröder.

Until 1867, the Zoll- und Akzisemauer separated Leipziger Platz from Potsdamer Platz. After its demolition, Potsdamer Platz became more important. Leipziger Platz became a significant business address. This was partly due to the Wertheim department stores.

In 1902, the square was opened to the public. Hermann Mächtig was entrusted with the redesign. He made sure to protect the beautiful linden trees.

World War II devastated Leipziger Platz. It was reduced to ruins. The square became part of the no man’s land surrounding the Berlin Wall.

After reunification, Leipziger Platz was reconstructed. It was rebuilt in its original configuration. However, it now features modern architecture.

Before the war, the Reichsmarineamt and the Wertheim department store were located here. The Mosse-Palais and the Palast-Hotel also stood on Leipziger Platz. Today, the Canadian Embassy occupies one of the corners. A small piece of the Berlin Wall remains in the southern half.

Today, you can visit the Mall of Berlin near Leipziger Platz. It offers a mix of fashion, luxury, technology, and gastronomy.

Leipziger Platz is a traffic hub. It is also an important shopping destination. The square stands as a symbol of Berlin’s history and rebirth. It blends the past with the present.
