Gresham Palace. Have you ever imagined a building that whispers tales of empires and revolutions?

Right before you stands the Gresham Palace a breathtaking example of Art Nouveau architecture. It sits proudly along the Danube River. Its elegant facade reflects the shimmering waters. This magnificent building holds a history far richer than its stunning exterior suggests.

Originally the site was home to the Nakó House a neoclassical palace. The London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company purchased the property in 1880. At that time it was illegal for British insurance companies to invest in stocks. Rental income however was perfectly legal. The company needed grander headquarters. They commissioned Zsigmond Quittner and József Vágó to create a masterpiece. Construction began in 1904. The Gresham Palace opened its doors in 1907. It was named after Sir Thomas Gresham. He was a 16th-century English financier. He founded the Royal Exchange in London.

The palace served as offices and residences for Gresham’s senior staff. After World War II the Red Army used it as barracks. It fell into disrepair. During the communist era it became a simple apartment building. Following the fall of communism in 1990 the Hungarian government gifted the palace to the city of Budapest.

An attempt to turn it into a hotel by Oberoi Hotels failed in 1995. Legal battles with residents caused the project to collapse. Gresco Investments Ltd acquired the building in 1998. They received permission to renovate it into a luxury hotel. They raised $85 million. Four Seasons Hotels agreed to manage the renovated property.

Quinlan Private an Irish investment company bought the building in 2001. They undertook extensive renovations. Original features such as the grand staircase stained glass mosaics ironwork and winter gardens were meticulously restored. The hotel reopened in June 2004. It now boasts 179 guest rooms including 17 suites. Today the State General Reserve Fund of Oman owns the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace. But Four Seasons continues to manage this iconic Budapest landmark.

The Gresham Palace is more than a hotel. It is a living testament to Budapest’s rich history. It reflects the city’s resilience and its enduring spirit. It stands as a symbol of elegance and grandeur. It is a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future. Enjoy your stay in this remarkable place.
