Founded in 1872 Saint Peter’s University boasts a rich history. It began as Saint Peter’s College a liberal arts college for men. The first students enrolled in 1878. The college faced challenges. World War I caused a decline in enrollment. The college closed in 1918 reopening in 1930. This reopening marked a new beginning. It was a rebirth symbolized by the peacock mascot. The peacock reflects the college’s resurrection and eternal life. The name also connects to Jersey City’s original name Pavonia meaning Land of the Peacock.
The college moved to its current location on Kennedy Boulevard in 1936. Expansion followed. New buildings arose McDermott Hall Dinneen Hall and the Yanitelli Recreational Center. In 1966 Saint Peter’s became fully coeducational. Women had been admitted to the evening program earlier in 1930. Thirty-five women were even admitted during World War II due to low enrollment.
Growth continued throughout the years. A branch campus opened in Englewood Cliffs in 1975. This campus catered to adult learners. The first graduate program began in 1980. Residence halls were added to accommodate the increasing student population. Saint Peter’s received university status in 2012. This marked a significant milestone. The institution officially changed its name to Saint Peter’s University.
The university has achieved significant milestones. It awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to Martin Luther King Jr in 1965. It was the first Jesuit school to do so. Saint Peter’s also made headlines with its basketball team. The team’s victories including an upset over Duke in 1968 gained national attention. More recently the men’s team reached the Elite 8 in the 2022 NCAA tournament. This was a historic achievement for a 15 seed.
