Beneath the towering steel girders of the Williamsburg Bridge, Roebling Playground has echoed with the laughter of children for over a century. Roebling Playground shares its name with the street that borders it. But who was Roebling? John Augustus Roebling, the mastermind behind the Brooklyn Bridge, lends his name to both street and playground. The street, originally Sixth Street, was renamed in 1885 to honor Roebling, five years after his death. Roebling, born in Prussia in 1803, embarked on a remarkable journey. He studied at the prestigious Polytechnic School in Berlin, and after a period of government work, he sought a new life in America. Landing in Pennsylvania in 1831, he helped establish a Prussian colony near Pittsburgh. He married Johanna Herting, and they raised nine children. Roebling initially pursued farming, but his engineering spirit couldn’t be contained. He shifted careers, eventually landing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital. There, he revolutionized the world of bridge building. He designed and developed a method for stranding and weaving wire cables. This innovation would become crucial to his most famous project, the Brooklyn Bridge, a symbol of innovation and perseverance. So, as you stand in Roebling Playground, remember that you stand on ground imbued with history. The echoes of children’s games mingle with the whispers of the past, a testament to the enduring spirit of John A. Roebling.
