“Serving the poor, widows and orphans” was the humble mission. We are standing in front of Youngnak Presbyterian Church. This church is a testament to faith and service in Seoul.
Youngnak Presbyterian Church was founded in 1945 by Kyung-Chik Han. He later won the Templeton Prize in 1992. Imagine twenty-seven refugees seeking religious freedom below the 38th parallel. They started this church.
Han Kyung-Chik is often called the “Billy Graham of South Korea.” He embraced refugees from Soviet-occupied North Korea. He used meager resources to help those on the margins. Shelters rose for war widows and orphans.
Initially, the congregation met in tents. As the church grew, they built a new facility. It replaced the original building in May 1950. By then, membership had soared to over 4,000.
Youngnak Presbyterian Church became one of the world’s largest Presbyterian congregations. By 1992, it had 60,000 members. That number excluded 500 sister churches planted by its members. The location is near Myeongdong Station and Euljiro 3-ga Station.
The church stands in one of Seoul’s most expensive neighborhoods. This is a stark contrast to its beginnings. The humble origins are important to remember.
In 1998, Youngnak started an English language ministry. It was called International Worship in English. An American missionary named Bill Majors founded it. He was later honored as an Honorary Citizen of Seoul.
Inside, a small museum honors Han Kyung-Chik. His few possessions are on display. A winter hat, cane, glasses and books tell a story. He lived simply after his wife died. He gave away his Templeton Prize money. He did not pass the church to his son.
Han’s choices send a powerful message. Christian leaders should be humble. Pastors should not seek personal wealth. The church is not a family business.
Youngnak Presbyterian Church offers several services. Traditional worship services are at 10 AM on Sundays. Contemporary worship services happen at 3:30 PM on Sundays. Children’s Ministry worship is also at 10 AM on Sundays. Services are in English and Korean.
