“Sixteen thousand tiles” someone gasps nearby. The Capela das Almas stands before us. It is also known as the Chapel of Souls. Some call it Saint Catherine Chapel. Its tile-covered facade is famous.

The Capela das Almas dates back to the 18th century. But the tile panels weren’t added until 1929. Eduardo Leite designed them. He worked at the Viúva Lamego ceramics factory. This factory specialized in hand-painted ceramic tiles. It had been producing them since 1849.

Look closely at the azulejos. They depict scenes from the lives of saints. Saint Francis of Assisi is one. Saint Catherine is another. The tiles served a purpose. They promoted religious education. Many people could not read or write then. The images told stories.

The Capela das Almas required many tiles. About 16000 were needed. They cover 360 square meters of the building’s walls. The tiles make this chapel special. It is a must-see in Porto.

Step inside the Capela das Almas. The interior is less extravagant than the exterior. But it still has charm. Admire the 18th-century altarpiece. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Souls. Notice the religious statues and paintings. Some date back centuries.

The Capela das Almas was once connected to a cemetery. It was for those without family or means. They needed a proper burial. This is where the name “Chapel of Souls” comes from. It has a somber origin.

The stained glass window is on the main facade. It represents the souls. Inside, the saint images are modern. They contrast with the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas. That image dates from the 18th century.

The Capela das Almas is on Rua de Santa Catarina. This is a busy shopping street. The chapel stands out from other buildings here. Its blue and white tiles catch the eye. The Bolhão Metro Station is nearby. So is the Mercado do Bolhão.

The Capela das Almas is open daily. You can visit from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM. But check the timings beforehand. They may change for special events. There is no entrance fee. Donations are welcome. They help maintain the chapel.

The Capela das Almas is more than a pretty building. It represents Portuguese culture. It shows the city’s history. Whether you are religious or not, it has something to appreciate.
