Ever wondered where Budapest’s Unitárius templom stands as a testament to religious freedom? The Unitárius templom is not just a building. It is a symbol of a community’s unwavering faith.

Let’s step back to the late 19th century. Budapest was experiencing rapid growth. Unitarians sought a place to call their own. Before the Unitárius templom was built Unitarian congregations gathered in the Reformed Church from 1869. The Unitárius templom became a reality between 1888 and 1890.

Samu Petz designed the Unitárius templom in the neogothic style. Petz was a renowned Hungarian architect. The Unitárius templom’s design reflects the spirit of the Unitarian community. The building is more than just a church. It includes a parsonage and a library. It also houses the headquarters of the Hungarian Unitarians.

Notice the pointed portal and the balcony above. The roof ridge dominates the facade. Look at the glass front. The tracery is shaped like circular segments. Miksa Róth designed the glass decorations of the Unitárius templom.

Inside the Unitárius templom the single nave draws your eye to the altar. The altar is carved from oak. The communion table the pews and the organ loft are also oak. The current organ was installed in 1995. Three tall pointed windows surround the altar of the Unitárius templom. The ribbed vaulting in the chancel emphasizes the church’s gothic style.

The Unitárius templom faced challenges during World War II. In 1944 the Unitárius templom sustained damage. The spire was temporarily restored. The organ was destroyed. In 1949 the communist regime nationalized the building. However the Unitárius templom remained in church use.

The Unitárius templom regained ownership of 51% of the property rights in 1991. It fully regained ownership in 2010. The exterior of the neogothic building was renovated between 1998 and 2004. The stone carvings and rosette were restored. The entire folded metal roof and the restored spire regained their original shape in 2013-2014.

The history of the Budapest Unitárius Egyházközség began with József Ferencz’s first Unitarian service in Budapest in 1869. The first entry in the church register dates from 1869. It is the baptism of Áron Gyula Buzogány’s son. In 1876 the Budapest branch of the church officially formed. It was a daughter church of the Unitarian mother church in Kolozsvár. János Hajós a ministry department head became its first trustee. The first pastor from Kolozsvár became its priest.

Today the Unitárius templom continues to be a vibrant center for Unitarians in Budapest. The Unitárius templom stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and community.
