Founded in 1918 New Home Missionary Baptist Church stands proudly in New Orleans. It began on Howard Avenue and South Robertson Streets. A small group of followers led by a senior deacon started it all. Rev G W White served as the first pastor. He was succeeded by Rev R H Royal in 1924.
Rev Marshall Lewis Sr took over in 1925. Under his leadership the church incorporated in 1927. It officially became New Home Missionary Baptist Church of New Orleans. The congregation grew to over 200 members. They needed more space. The church moved to 3140 Jackson Avenue. Rev Lewis served until his death in 1946.
Rev Murphy Smith became pastor in 1947. He served until 1952. During his time a new church building was constructed at the Jackson Avenue location. Rev Freddie H Dunn followed in 1953. He was a powerful leader. Membership continued to grow. Another building was needed. In July 1962 a new building on Jackson Avenue was dedicated.
In October 1964 Pastor Dunn resigned. He became pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. Many members followed him. Only a few remained. The Louisiana Freedmen Association helped find a new pastor. Rev Willie Hausey presided over the church. He provided guidance.
After much prayer Robert C Blakes was chosen. He came from Woodville Mississippi. In January 1965 he was ordained. He began his pastorate with only 30 members. He faced challenges. He had few members and little money. He trusted in God. The church grew and thrived despite obstacles. New Home Missionary Baptist Church continued to grow. It became a beacon of faith in the community. It expanded to Baton Rouge Hammond Algiers and even Houston Texas. The church’s ministry continues to this day. It serves thousands. It offers music dance youth senior prison and outreach ministries.
