Whispers of history echo across the ancient stones of Lugu Bridge. It stands as a silent sentinel, a bridge between centuries. Lugu Bridge, known in the West as Marco Polo Bridge, stretches gracefully over the Yongding River. The Venetian traveler, Marco Polo, himself marveled at its beauty during his 13th-century visit. He declared it to have “very few equals in the world.” Lugu Bridge’s construction began in 1189, a testament to the ingenuity of the Jin Dynasty. Completed in 1192, the bridge was later lovingly restored by the Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi Emperor in 1698 after flood damage. Today, Lugu Bridge remains a stunning example of ancient Chinese engineering. Its 266.5 meters span across eleven arches and ten piers, a solid granite structure that has withstood the test of time. Look closely at the bridge’s adornments. Hundreds of unique stone lions guard the bridge, perched on its pillars. Each lion is a work of art, varying in age and posture. Some date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, while a rare few hail from the earlier Yuan and even Jin dynasties. Legend has it that smaller lions hide on the larger ones, on their heads, backs, bellies, and paws. Counting them has become a game, with estimates ranging from 482 to 501, though historical records suggest there were once 627. At each end of Lugu Bridge stand four ornamental columns and marble steles, standing 4.65 meters tall. One stele commemorates the Kangxi Emperor’s reconstruction, while another bears the calligraphy of his grandson, the Qianlong Emperor. His inscription, “Morning moon over Lugou,” evokes the bridge’s timeless beauty. Lugu Bridge stands not just as a beautiful monument but as a key location in modern Chinese history. Here, on July 7, 1937, the first shots of the Second Sino-Japanese War rang out, forever etching the bridge into the memory of a nation. Lugu Bridge stands as a testament to artistry, resilience, and a pivotal moment in history. It’s a place where whispers of the past meet the promise of the future.
