Time marched on. Years of use took their toll. Structural surveys revealed problems. Parts of the pool surround and pool tank were nearing collapse. Emergency supports were needed. The centre closed in 2008 for a major refurbishment. This was no simple makeover. The project involved significant structural repairs. It also included upgrades to heating ventilation and water treatment systems. New high-efficiency gas-fired boilers were installed. A new ventilation system improved air quality. The electrical systems and lighting were almost entirely replaced. The external roof covering got a new layer of thermal insulation.
The refurbishment was extensive. New lockers were installed in the changing rooms. The health suite received new tiles. The pool itself also got new tiles. The entire project cost over £9 million.
