From the whispers of ancient spirits to the laughter of children playing, Đình Kim Mã Thượng has witnessed centuries of Hanoi’s vibrant tapestry. Đình Kim Mã Thượng, nestled in the heart of the bustling Cống Vị ward, is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam, a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Đình Kim Mã Thượng is one of the 15 ancient villages of Hanoi. Originally, this area was known as Kim Mã village, a part of the “Thập Tam Trại” (Thirteen Hamlets) established in the 11th century. These hamlets, located west of Thăng Long citadel, played a crucial role in the city’s history. During the Lý and Trần dynasties, the land around Đình Kim Mã Thượng served as a royal stable, earning it the nickname “Tầu Mã” or “Mã Trại.” The very name Kim Mã itself evokes images of powerful warhorses thundering across the fields. Đình Kim Mã Thượng honors three deities: Bụt Cái Đại Vương, Linh Lang Đại Vương, and Thái Tế Hoàng Pháp Trung. Each deity holds a special significance in Vietnamese folklore. Bụt Cái Đại Vương, also known as Phùng Hưng, is celebrated for his strength and leadership in resisting Chinese rule. Linh Lang, a son of King Lý Thánh Tông, is remembered for his bravery in defending the kingdom against invaders. He is said to have transformed into a dragon and disappeared into the western lake. Thái Tế Hoàng Pháp Trung, originally from Lệ Mật village, served as a mandarin during the Lý dynasty. He is credited with leading the resettlement of people from Lệ Mật to the western area of Thăng Long, establishing the Thirteen Hamlets. The original structure of Đình Kim Mã Thượng was built in the early 19th century, facing the Đền Thờ Thánh Linh Lang. It was constructed on elevated ground and financed by contributions from the villagers, especially the prominent families. Sadly, the original structure was heavily damaged during the war against the French. The current building reflects renovations and reconstructions made later, primarily during the Nguyễn dynasty and subsequent restorations. Today’s Đình Kim Mã Thượng, though not in its original form, still serves as a vital community center. It is a place where locals gather for festivals and ceremonies, keeping their cultural traditions alive. The annual festival, held on the 10th day of the second lunar month, celebrates the death anniversary of Hoàng Chân, the son of Linh Lang. This festival, like many others held at communal houses throughout Vietnam, is a vibrant expression of community spirit and historical memory. It is a bridge connecting the past with the present, reminding us of the sacrifices and triumphs of those who came before. Đình Kim Mã Thượng stands as a silent guardian of history, its walls echoing with the stories of generations past. It is a reminder that even amidst the modern hustle and bustle of Hanoi, the spirit of tradition endures.
