Why is Vang clinging to this hillside? It seems almost defiant, wouldn’t you agree? Well, Vang, my friends, had little choice. This little fishing village on the northwest coast of Bornholm found its space limited by the dramatic cliffs and the vast sea. Vang dates back to 1570, although whispers of Viking settlements and echoes of the Iron Age linger in this ancient soil. Life in Vang has always revolved around the harbor. Then, in the late 19th century, destiny took a curious turn. Vang, the fishing village, became a granite powerhouse. The granite quarried here was legendary, renowned for its strength and beauty. Copenhagen’s grand City Hall boasts Vang granite, its walls whispering tales of this unassuming village. Even a bridge spanning the Great Belt itself carries the legacy of Vang’s stone. But life in Vang was not without its hardships. Before the modest prosperity of the quarry, the winters were harsh, fueled by meager supplies of wood and peat.
