Here in Guindalera, history whispers from every corner. Guindalera is more than just a location. It is a vibrant area within Madrid’s Salamanca district.

Guindalera began as a humble suburb in the mid-19th century. Madrid was expanding. Market gardens thrived here. They used water from the Canal de Isabel II. Later, the “Madrid Moderno” project shaped Guindalera. Arturo Soria’s Linear City also left its mark.

The name “Guindalera” might come from a cherry orchard. This orchard was watered by the Abroñigal stream. A local farmer, known as “Don Guindo,” grew cherries. These cherries were valuable. They were preserved in liquor.

Today, Guindalera is bordered by key roads. Avenida de América marks its northern edge. Calle de Alcalá defines the south. Francisco Silvela Street lies to the northwest. The M-30 highway forms its eastern boundary. Interestingly, Guindalera now includes Parque de las Avenidas. It also encompasses the area around the famous Ventas bullring.

Speaking of the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, it is a major landmark. It is a short walk from the Ventas Metro station. This iconic bullring is the third largest in the world. Its neo-Mudéjar style is impressive. It opened in 1929.

Las Ventas has witnessed key moments in Spanish history. During the Civil War, it served as a munitions depot. An enormous vegetable garden even grew in the ring. In 1940, a bullfight honored Heinrich Himmler. He was a visiting SS general. Ironically, Himmler found bullfighting to be a “despicable and extremely bloody spectacle”. In 1965, The Beatles played their first Spanish concert here. It was a revolutionary moment.

Take a stroll through Guindalera. Visit the Parque de Eva Duarte de Perón. It honors Argentina’s former first lady. Admire the “hotelitos”. These unique European-style buildings date back to the 1890s. They were part of the Madrid Moderno project. Guindalera was once considered the most European of Madrid’s neighborhoods. Small hotels and single-family homes defined its character.

Guindalera played a role in Spanish rock and roll history. In 1971, Vicente “Mariscal” Romero opened the M&M disco on Calle Béjar. Famous artists like Brian Eno and Triana performed there.

Guindalera blends history, culture, and modern life. It is a neighborhood with stories to tell. From bullfights to rock concerts. Guindalera has something for everyone.
