There was barbequed lamb traditional kolo dancing gusle music and songs. One joyous member exclaimed “Blessed be the one who will be the first buried here”. Ironically he fell ill and was the first to be laid to rest in 1909. His gravestone Petar Bakoc’s remains today a poignant marker.

The community grew. They needed a church. A committee was formed to collect donations. They secured a plot of land from Jedinstvo. In 1910 Father Dabovich returned. He consecrated the newly built Saint Sava Church in Los Angeles. It was the first Orthodox church in Southern California.

The early parishioners were hardworking laborers. They had limited resources. They built not just a church but a symbol of hope and endurance.
