“Have you ever wondered where the name Havemeyer Playground comes from? This Bronx playground carries the name of a family that greatly influenced New York City’s history.
Let’s step back in time to the 19th century. The Havemeyer family established themselves as prominent figures in business and politics. It all began in 1644 when Hermann Hoevemeyer organized the first baker’s guild in Germany. Wilhelm Hoevemeyer, a descendant, then immigrated to the United States in 1799. He ventured into the sugar industry paving the way for his family’s future success.
The Havemeyers became synonymous with sugar refining in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Locals even called them the Sugar Kings. William Frederick Havemeyer rose to become the Mayor of New York City serving in 1845 and 1848. His grandsons Theodore and Henry Havemeyer continued the family legacy. They essentially monopolized the sugar industry for a time. Their control gradually waned but their impact remained undeniable.
The Havemeyer family’s story extends beyond the playground’s name. Theodore A. Havemeyer purchased a blockfront on Church Street in 1891 for a significant sum. He planned to erect a million-dollar office building there. The Havemeyer Building was innovative for its time. It featured modern elevator technology and offered amenities like 24-hour police protection.
Interestingly the Havemeyer Building attracted industrial tenants such as wire and tube companies. It even housed the offices of the Street Railway Journal. During the Spanish-American War the Navy set up an office in the Havemeyer Building to acquire merchant vessels for war service.
Despite its innovations the Havemeyer Building faced challenges. The elevated railroad nearby was a constant annoyance. The Havemeyer Real Estate Company even sued to have it removed but the suit was unsuccessful. The Havemeyer Building was eventually demolished in 1931 to make way for a new bank building.
The Havemeyer family’s influence is still visible in various places around the city. Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg is another testament to their legacy. The name Havemeyer resonates with the history of New York City’s sugar industry and the contributions of a prominent family.
So as you enjoy Havemeyer Playground remember the Havemeyers. Think about their rise in the sugar industry their political influence and their impact on the city’s landscape. This playground is more than just a place to play. It is a reminder of New York City’s rich and complex past.”
