Founded in 1296 Chiang Mai City Hall stands proudly. It’s a testament to centuries of history. The city’s story is deeply intertwined with this very spot. Imagine King Mengrai a powerful leader. He envisioned a new city a center for the migrating Tai people from Yunnan. Chiang Mai meaning new city became his creation. The Old Town was meticulously laid out. It followed the cardinal points an auspicious beginning in 1296. The moat and city walls were constructed. Parts still stand today.

Chiang Mai thrived for centuries. It reached its zenith under King Tilokarat in the 16th century. Wat Chedi Luang’s towering pagoda was erected. Sadly an earthquake in 1545 reduced its height. Other temples like Wat Chiang Man and Wat Phra Singh date from the 14th century. They house valuable ancient Buddhas. Laos and Burmese influences are visible in the architecture. The city faced challenges. It fell under Burmese control for two hundred years. At one point it was almost entirely deserted. Siamese forces under General Kawila liberated Chiang Mai at the end of the 1700s. The city walls and moat were restored in 1801. Foreigners began to arrive. Explorer Ralph Fitch visited in the 1580s. He described it as a fair and prosperous town. By the mid-1600s British traders had arrived. Teak traders from Burma frequented Chiang Mai in the 1800s. A Chinese community had already established itself centuries before. Their heritage is still evident around Warorot Market.

Chiang Mai’s isolation ended when the railway arrived in 1920. The telegraph also came. By 1932 it became a province of Siam later Thailand. It’s now the second largest city in Thailand. Chiang Mai boasts a significant handicraft industry. Ancient and contemporary skills are on display in villages like Baan Tawai and Borsang. Items made here are exported worldwide. The last of the Northern royals are still alive. The last Chiang Mai King’s daughter became a favorite consort of King Chulalongkorn in 1900. The Dara Rasamee legacy of longan farming and Northern traditions remains common. The city and its people fiercely preserve their Lanna heritage. They speak their own dialect. They wear traditional costume on Fridays. They uphold unique ceremonies like Yee Peng and Loi Kratong.
