Wondering why this lake is here? This is Allermöher See. It is not a natural lake. It was created in 1984.
Allermöher See came about from digging for resources. Builders needed Kies and Klei. These are gravel and clay in German. They needed them for a new housing development. The development was called Neuallermöhe Ost. So, the digging created Allermöher See.
Now, Allermöher See is a popular spot. People come to swim and relax. It is located southeast of Hamburg. Specifically, it is in the Bergedorf district. You will find it in the Vier- und Marschlanden region.
The main swimming area is on the northeast shore of Allermöher See. There is a large grassy area for sunbathing. Next to it is a sandy beach about ten meters wide. Swimmers have a designated area. This keeps non-swimmers safe. There are also safety features like a rescue ring. A call box is available too. You will also find a playground close to the shore of Allermöher See.
Be careful when entering the water. The bottom drops off suddenly. This is common in artificial lakes. Typically, lifeguards are present. They are there on weekends from June to August. The hours are 2 PM to 7 PM. Lifeguards are also present during summer vacations. The same hours apply.
The Allermöher See is freely accessible. You can visit anytime. There is no entrance fee.
Allermöher See has some nice facilities. Toilets and showers are available. There are also designated grilling areas.
The water quality is excellent. It has been rated “excellent” for the past four years. This makes Allermöher See ideal for families.
Getting here is easy. If you drive, take Rosa-Schapiere-Weg. If using a GPS use the address Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Ring 80, 21035 Hamburg. You can also take public transport. Take bus M12 from S-Bahn Allermöhe. Get off at the “Wilhelm-Osterhold-Stieg” stop. The beach is a short walk from there.
Allermöher See also features natural shorelines. Reed zones and bushes are there. This supports local wildlife. There is a shallow water zone near the north shore. This is for non-swimmers. It is marked with white buoys. A floating platform is also in the lake.
Sadly, there have been accidents at Allermöher See. A memorial stone stands near the beach. It remembers those who lost their lives. The stone has an inscription. It urges people to “Be watchful” in five languages.
SiWa has been in charge of lifeguard duties. This is the Sicheres Wasser e. V. organization. They are present during good weather. Their hours are 2 PM to 7 PM.
