Slipping through the bustling port of Zayed, imagine yourself transported back to 2009. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is here, not for sun and sand, but to inaugurate Camp de la Paix, also known as Abu Dhabi Base. This isn’t just any military installation. It represents a significant partnership between France and the United Arab Emirates, a symbol of their shared commitment to regional stability. Abu Dhabi Base, or IMFEAU as it’s known within French military circles, is more than just a base. It’s a tri-service hub, encompassing naval, air, and land components. The naval base, nestled in Port Zayed, commands a strategic view of the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway, a chokepoint for nearly half of the world’s oil supply, underscores the base’s importance. The air component of Abu Dhabi Base is located at Al Dhafra Air Base. Sharing the space with UAE and US forces, the French presence here includes Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets. This base, a key element of Abu Dhabi Base’s overall mission, provides a crucial air power projection platform. Finally, there’s the army training camp. Situated about 50 kilometers from Abu Dhabi, this camp sharpens the skills of French soldiers for urban and desert warfare. It exemplifies the diverse roles that Abu Dhabi Base plays in the region. Initially housing around 250 personnel, Abu Dhabi Base was projected to accommodate up to 500 personnel from all three branches. Funded by the UAE but operated by the French, this arrangement reflects the unique nature of the partnership.
