Palacete Melo

Envision yourself transported back to 1833. Here, before us stands Palacete Melo. It was built by Joaquim Moreira de Melo. Palacete Melo isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to Vila do Conde’s romantic seaside past. The Palacete Melo and the surrounding streets embody the 19th-century vision of a beach resort. This area stands as a testament to the era’s distinct architectural style. After Melo’s death, the palacete changed hands several times. Some of the subsequent owners had Brazilian connections. One owner even renamed it “Villa Josefina” after his wife. In the 1940s, Delfim Ferreira, a local industrialist, donated Palacete Melo to the Narciso Ferreira Foundation. It then became a children’s summer camp. For three decades, children of Ferreira’s factory workers enjoyed seaside summers here. This continued until 1974. Palacete Melo was declared a Public Interest Building in 1986. Later, it served as a daycare center until 2011. Today, the beautifully restored Palacete Melo serves as a youth hostel. You can almost hear the echoes of children’s laughter mingling with the gentle sea breeze. The building’s Noble Hall now shares the palacete’s rich history. It hosts cultural activities for everyone to enjoy. Inside, the common rooms feature artwork. These are reproductions by artists like Sonia Delaunay and Julio. These artists are connected to Vila do Conde’s history and the Portuguese Modernism movement. Now, Palacete Melo offers comfortable accommodations. It has double rooms, dormitories, common areas, a garden, and reading rooms. Palacete Melo is conveniently located in the heart of Vila do Conde. This makes it easy to explore other city attractions and the beach.
