Consider this: the world relies on energy. What fuels our modern lives here in Saudi Arabia? We are standing before the National Gas Industry. It plays a vital role in the Kingdom’s energy sector.

The National Gas Industry helps manage Saudi Arabia’s vast natural gas reserves. These reserves rank among the world’s largest. The country holds over 7 trillion cubic meters of proven natural gas.

Let’s dive into some background. For years, Saudi Arabia led the world in petroleum production and exports. In 2011, it pumped about 1.7 million cubic meters of petroleum per day. That is over 10 million barrels. Much of this was exported. Domestic use is increasing mainly for electricity production.

Saudi Arabia’s economy relies heavily on petroleum. Oil accounts for 90% of the country’s exports. It also provides about 75% of the government’s revenue. The oil industry accounts for about 45% of Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product. The private sector contributes 40%. Despite diversification efforts, especially in petrochemicals, the economy remains oil-dependent.

The National Gas Industry helps manage the Kingdom’s natural gas. Saudi Arabia has one of the largest natural gas reserves in the Persian Gulf. These reserves are over 7 trillion cubic meters. Global production reached 4.6 billion cubic meters of oil and 3 trillion cubic meters of natural gas in 2009.

Saudi Arabia prioritizes upstream gas investment. This is mainly for domestic power generation, not for export. The country had plans to diversify its energy sources. Solar and nuclear power are being developed.

Before the master gas system, oil companies often flared the gas. They burned it off as it came from the oil well. Until recently, natural gas production was closely tied to oil production. The World Trade Organization criticized the government and Aramco for heavily subsidizing natural gas.

In January 2020, Aramco announced a major investment. $1.85 billion would set up Saudi Arabia’s first natural gas storage facility. In February 2020, Aramco planned a further investment. They would invest $110 billion to develop gas reserves in the Al-Jafurah field. Production should begin between 2024 and 2036. This field is expected to hold 5.7 trillion cubic meters of wet gas. It is also expected to produce significant amounts of ethane and gas liquids.

The National Gas Industry plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s electricity sector. Saudi Arabia has one of the fastest growing electricity consumption rates in the Middle East. In 2005, it was the world’s 15th largest consumer of primary energy. Over 60% of this energy was petroleum-based. The rest came from natural gas.

Saudi Arabia is enhancing its electrical power sector infrastructure. This is to meet rising demand from residential and commercial sectors. The kingdom aims to increase its electricity generation capacity. It wants to go from 83 gigawatts in 2023 to 110 gigawatts by 2028. This will be supported by a $293 billion investment. This will go into both conventional power and renewable energy projects. A key goal is to generate 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The National Gas Industry contributes significantly to Saudi Arabia’s energy landscape. It supports both current needs and future diversification plans. It is a cornerstone of the nation’s energy sector. It helps Saudi Arabia meet its growing energy demands and achieve its Vision 2030 goals. The National Gas Industry remains pivotal for Saudi Arabia’s economic growth.
