From a modest three-decker on East Sixth Street to leading the Boston Police Department, William Evans’s journey is a true Boston story. Here at Evans Hall, named in honor of this remarkable figure, we can reflect on his impactful career and deep connection to Boston College. Evans, the youngest of six brothers, grew up in a tight-knit South Boston community. Tragedy struck early with the loss of his mother and later his father. Raised by his older brothers and supported by his neighbors, Evans developed a deep appreciation for community. This value shaped his approach to policing throughout his career. After graduating from Suffolk University and earning a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College, Evans dedicated 38 years to the Boston Police Department. He rose through the ranks, serving as captain in Allston/Brighton and the South End, then as superintendent overseeing citywide security. Evans even ran the Boston Marathon multiple times. In 2014, he was appointed Police Commissioner, a role he held until 2018. Evans’s leadership focused on community engagement, transparency, and diversifying the police force. His efforts contributed to significant crime reduction, earning national recognition for Boston. Evans brought his community-focused approach to Boston College when he became Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police in 2018. His commitment to building strong relationships helped create a safer environment for the entire BC community. Evans Hall stands as a testament to his dedication to public service and the city of Boston.
