Behold the Poliedrica Meridiana Solare a marvel of engineering and artistry. This isn’t just any sundial. It’s a 21-meter-long brass rod inlaid in the Cathedral’s floor. A testament to human ingenuity it tells time with grace and precision.

The Poliedrica Meridiana Solare was the brainchild of Father Giuseppe Piazzi. A renowned astronomer he designed this masterpiece in the late 1700s. Piazzi faced challenges. He needed a location accessible to the public yet respectful of religious services. The Cathedral’s layout presented obstacles. Columns and the building’s orientation complicated the project. Despite this he persevered.

The final placement near the main altar may seem odd. But Piazzi found a solution. A small hole high in the dome acts as a gnomon. Sunlight filters through it striking the brass rod precisely at noon. The light’s position shifts throughout the year tracing the passage of months seasons and zodiac signs.

The Poliedrica Meridiana Solare is more than just a timepiece. It’s an artwork. The brass rod is embellished with a white marble border. Intricate inlays of multicolored marbles depict the signs of the zodiac. A nearby plaque displays a sample of the ancient Sicilian “palmo” a unit of measurement. The inscription proudly declares the sundial’s dedication to public use.

Even during the 1999 solar eclipse the Poliedrica Meridiana Solare offered a unique spectacle. The partially obscured sun projected onto the Cathedral floor. A stunning image marking the historical event.

The Poliedrica Meridiana Solare continues to fascinate. It blends science art and history. It stands as a symbol of Palermo’s rich heritage and dedication to precision. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of its creators. It’s more than a sundial. It’s a story etched in time.
