Is it possible for a place to be both historic and modern at the same time? Here in Potsdam Süd, you’ll find that very blend. Potsdam Süd is the most populous district in Potsdam. It brings together the Teltower and Templiner suburbs. It includes the Hermannswerder peninsula and the residential areas. These areas include Schlaatz, Waldstadt I, and Waldstadt II.
Potsdam Süd is characterized by several detached house settlements. It features three large housing estates as well. The “Siedlung Eigenheim”, located near the forest, has become a popular residential area. The listed Stadtrandsiedlung is known for its distinctive roof shape. The listed residential settlements “Kolonie Daheim” and “Kunersdorfer Straße” also create homogeneous residential areas. Their two to three-story buildings date from 1925 to 1945.
Let’s take a closer look. Kolonie Daheim was built between 1894 and 1897. It housed workers from the Royal Railway Workshops. Later, it became the Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk Potsdam. Today, it enjoys protected status as a historic monument.
On the Hermannswerder peninsula, the Hofbauer Foundation is in the southern area. It has a social focus. The Tornow and Küsselstraße in the northern area are characterized by detached houses.
The Ravensberge forest stretches between Teltower and Templiner Vorstadt. Its extensive network of paths invites you to relax in nature. It extends to the Templiner See with its shore road. The Templin lido and then the town of Caputh can be reached via this road. Within this forest area is the Telegrafenberg. It is home to the famous Einstein Tower. It also features the Great Refractor of the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam. In recent years, the Institute for Climate Impact Research has firmly established itself here. So has the Geocentre.
The Templiner Vorstadt is named after the Templin desert. It lies to the south. It’s directly on the B 2 towards Michendorf. It sits at the foot of the Potsdamer Brauhausberg. The name Brauhausberg goes back to the former Royal Brewery. It had its headquarters on this mountain since 1728. Tunnels were driven into the mountain to store the beer. These can still be seen today. In winter, ice floes from the nearby Havel were stored in these. This ensured sufficient cooling in summer. The former brewery was still in operation in the 1980s. Only then was it replaced by a modern brewing plant. It was located in the Rehbrücke industrial estate.
Am Schlaatz is the youngest development area in this district. The apartment block estate was built by 1987. It sits on the Potsdam part of the Nuthewiesen. Sand from the nearby Baggersee was used to fill the building subsoil. Today, this residential area is very popular. Many students from Potsdam and Berlin universities live here.
Waldstadt I is the oldest of Potsdam’s new building areas. It was built from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. It’s on the immediate border with what was then Rehbrücke. The residential area is built in the middle of the forest. It uses a large block construction method.
Waldstadt II was built from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. This prefabricated housing estate borders a large forest area. This forest includes the Teufelssee and the Ravensberge. These are popular excursion destinations. This forest area is also a nature reserve.
Potsdam Süd shows how different eras can coexist. From historic settlements to modern housing estates. It blends nature and urban living. It’s a district with many facets.
