How vital are well-trained flood defence experts? The devastating storm surge of December 6, 2013, which reached 6.08 meters above normal sea level, serves as a stark reminder. It was the second-highest storm surge ever recorded in Hamburg. That is why we are standing here today at the Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung.
Back in 2008, Hamburg recognized this need and the LSBG established this training center. The Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung aims to equip members of our flood defence organization with the essential expertise and confidence needed to confront the challenges posed by storm surges. The Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung offers day-long training sessions. These sessions blend theoretical instruction with hands-on practical exercises. The Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung also trains specialists from all over Germany.

Where does this vital training take place? Right here at the Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung. Our Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung is located directly at Billhafen near the Brandshofer lock. A large material depot for flood defence is also located on this site. This provides a vivid connection to real-world emergency operations. The Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung’s classroom is housed in the historic building at Brandshofer Deich 2. A small snack is provided here during the training.
Let’s take a closer look at what a training day at the Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung involves. Participants gain essential knowledge and procedures for assessing situations at the dike. They also learn proper behavior before and during flood operations. This knowledge is imparted through expert presentations in our classroom. Practical exercises reinforce this learning.
Here at the Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung, participants practice using stoplog closures. These closures are installed in a 20-foot container. The completed closure is then tested for leaks by impounding water behind it.
This section of the Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung features a life-size replica of an air-side dike foot. It allows trainees to gain in-depth knowledge of dike foot protection. The Schulungszentrum Deichverteidigung demonstrates the seepage line and the creation of a stationary state.
