Imagine a world where the most complex secrets of science are explored. That world exists right here at the China Academy of Engineering Physics Graduate School in Beijing. Specifically within its Engineering Physics Building.
The China Academy of Engineering Physics or CAEP was established in 1958. It started as a national research and production institution. Its core mission was focused on China’s strategic equipment. The Engineering Physics Building stands as a testament to this commitment.
Initially known as the Ninth Academy or the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Chemistry, CAEP plays a vital role. It conducts long-term basic research. This research is guided by national goals. It relies on major equipment construction within China.
Graduate education at CAEP began in 1984. Since then, it has produced many strategic scientific and technological personnel. These graduates are essential to the nation. In 2015, CAEP established the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics or GSCAEP right here in Beijing. This was built upon the foundations of the former Graduate Department. The mission was clear. They wanted to build a distinctive graduate school. This would be achieved through scientific and educational cooperation.
GSCAEP set a new direction to achieve this ambitious goal. First, the focus was to implement customized graduate education. These programs are aligned with national goals. Second, it aimed to conduct basic research. This research would address strategic needs and explore scientific frontiers. Third, the goal was to promote capacity building. This would strengthen CAEP’s basic research team through cooperation.
The Engineering Physics Building leverages the advantages of CAEP’s resources. It uses university and large-scale engineering research platforms. It also relies on 16 scientific entities and six national key laboratories. Students work with mentors. These include recipients of the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” Meritorious Service Medal. They also include academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Leading figures in various disciplines also contribute. GSCAEP has become a vital training base. It fosters high-end talents within this very building.
GSCAEP boasts impressive academic resources. There are five postdoctoral mobile stations. It features six first-level doctoral degree authorization points. These points include 17 second-level doctoral degree authorization points. It also contains four first-level master’s degree authorization points and one second-level master’s degree authorization point. The faculty includes 321 doctoral supervisors and 519 master’s supervisors. They cover diverse fields. These include mathematics, physics, mechanics, and mechanical engineering. Optical engineering and material science are also covered. You can also find electronic science and technology here. Then there is information and communication engineering. Of course, computer science and technology are represented. Weapons science and technology are also studied here. Finally, nuclear science and technology round out the disciplines.
In 2021, GSCAEP admitted 170 master’s students and 191 doctoral students. There were also 18 jointly trained doctoral students. As of December 2021, there were 1,266 students. This included 806 doctoral students and 460 master’s students.
Since 1984, GSCAEP has educated nearly 2,000 master’s students. It has also trained over 900 doctoral students. These graduates contribute to China’s strategic equipment construction. They also support high-tech equipment fields. The Engineering Physics Building plays a crucial role. It provides talent to support China’s development. It ensures the continuous and healthy progress. It is a hub of scientific advancement.
