It is a global organization tied to Fo Guang Shan, the largest Buddhist organization in Taiwan, extending its reach internationally. In 2003, the association achieved a milestone. The United Nations granted BLIA NGO status with both the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Department of Public Information (DPI). Although the world headquarters resides at the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, California, the San Diego branch plays a vital role in this global network.
