Nestled in the serene landscape along the Douro River, lies the charming village of Barqueiros. Barqueiros, a parish first mentioned in 1228, boasts a rich history. The population of Barqueiros is just under 2,000 people. They live within an area of roughly eight square kilometers. Barqueiros is known for its tranquil atmosphere. But beneath the surface lies a story of conflict and resilience. In the 1980s, the tranquility of Barqueiros was shattered. The citizens rose up in protest against Kaolin mining. This struggle became known as the “Guerra dos Caulinos,” or Kaolin Wars. The protests continued throughout the decade, culminating in a tragic event. In June 1989, a young man named José Carlos Manhente Simões was shot and killed by GNR forces. This event marked a turning point in the fight against the mining operations. Today, Barqueiros has returned to its peaceful rhythm. But the memory of the Kaolin Wars and the fight for their land remains. Beyond the struggles, Barqueiros is known for its vibrant festival. The Festa da Senhora das Necessidades takes place each year in early September. This lively event is a celebration of the local culture and traditions, attracting visitors from across the region. So, as you stand here, in the heart of Barqueiros, take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Remember the stories of those who fought to protect it. And if you happen to visit during the festival, be prepared for a truly unforgettable experience. Barqueiros is more than just a picturesque village; it is a testament to the strength and resilience of its people.
