Awakening to the spirit of faith, Goodwill Baptist Church stands as a testament to Detroit’s rich history. Goodwill Baptist Church has witnessed the changing tides of time since its inception in 1893. Founded by Reverend John H. Reffels, the church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The early deacons, men like Joe Manuel and Henry McCathen, Sr., laid the foundation for a church that would endure for generations. Goodwill Baptist Church thrived under the leadership of Reverend Lois Johnson from 1913 to 1938. The church continued to grow, both spiritually and physically. Under Reverend Harry L. Toussaint’s leadership, starting in 1983, the church underwent significant renovations. New classrooms, a fellowship hall, and an extension to the entrance were added. The church wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a place where souls were saved and lives were transformed. The church has also been a place of ordination, licensing associate ministers and deacons to spread the word. The Goodwill Baptist Church has a deep commitment to community service. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the church formed a Disaster Relief Committee. This committee implemented a Meals On Wheels program, providing hot meals to those displaced by the hurricane. The program continues to serve the community, offering a nutritious meal once a week.
