Opened in April 2017, Osaka University of Commerce’s University Commons re-Act building is a hub of student activity. The name “re-Act” is short for “research and entrepreneurial academic commons TANIOKA GAKUEN”. This modern structure, with its four steel-framed floors and a total area of 7,465 square meters, offers a dynamic learning environment. Osaka University of Commerce’s University Commons re-Act provides a space for active learning, group discussions, and presentations. Equipped with ICT technology, it fosters collaborative learning among students. The design of the University Commons re-Act connects it to the neighboring Tanioka Memorial Museum, preserving the historical aesthetic. The first two floors house a spacious learning commons, approximately 500 square meters, complete with individual study areas and presentation spaces. The second floor also boasts a workshop area and a white board for collaborative projects. The third floor features seminar rooms for focused discussions and a variety of meeting spaces. Finally, the fourth floor houses an arena suitable for sports like basketball and volleyball. Osaka University of Commerce’s University Commons re-Act also promotes sustainability. The building incorporates natural ventilation and lighting. High-efficiency lighting and air conditioning systems are controlled by a central monitoring system and a Building Energy Management System (BEMS). A 50kW solar panel system on the roof contributes to the building’s energy needs. Interestingly, motion sensors in the learning commons detect occupancy to control lighting, ensuring energy efficiency.
